Let Your Characters Lead the Way! (with Cindy Littlefield)
Save those cookie cutters for baking. In fiction, the most memorable characters are the ones that break the mold. Sure, they begin as figments of your imagination, but step out of their way at the right moments, and they’ll take you places far more exciting, and meaningful, than you might ever have conceived. In this one-day class, we’ll look closely at dynamic protagonists and antagonists from popular works of fiction and film to examine how their unique personalities and desires—rather than the writer’s—inform their decisions and ultimately steer the plot. Next, we’ll experiment with writing exercises designed to unveil and convey what truly makes our own characters tick. We’ll also explore the amazing things that can happen when a brand new character unexpectedly joins the cast. Workshop participants are invited to bring a scene from a work in progress or choose from a variety of provided prompts.
