Let Your Characters Lead the Way! (with Cindy Littlefield)
Save those cookie cutters for baking. In fiction, the most memorable characters are the ones that break the mold. Sure, they begin as figments of your imagination, but step out of their way at the right moments, and they’ll take you places far more exciting, and meaningful, than you might ever have conceived. In this one-day class, we’ll look closely at dynamic protagonists and antagonists from popular works of fiction and film to examine how their unique personalities and desires—rather than the writer’s—inform their decisions and ultimately steer the plot. Next, we’ll experiment with writing exercises designed to unveil and convey what truly makes our own characters tick. We’ll also explore the amazing things that can happen when a brand new character unexpectedly joins the cast. Workshop participants are invited to bring a scene from a work in progress or choose from a variety of provided prompts.
About the Instructor:
CINDY LITTLEFIELD’s fiction has appeared in Inside the Bell Jar, Litro, Dogzplot, and the Rose & Thorn Journal, and she was a former finalist in the Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Southern New Hampshire University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University. She is a freelance writer, editor, and writing coach who has developed and edited online and print content for a variety of publishers, including Disney Interactive Media, EDDA, and Storey Publishing. Refund & Credit Policy at PVWW
Because of non-refundable fees that we, PVWW, must pay for every transaction that happens, we are no longer able to give full refunds to those who register then withdraw from a workshop or class. If you withdraw from a workshop ten days or more before the start of the class, you'll receive full credit toward another workshop or class of equal value OR a refund minus 20% of the original fee. If you withdraw nine days before the start of the class up until the day before, you'll receive credit toward another class OR a refund minus 30%. If the class is canceled by PVWW for any reason, we will notify you and you will receive a full refund or, if you choose, credit in the amount of your payment toward another future PVWW class. Anyone who does not specify whether they would like a refund or credit within three months will automatically receive credit and will no longer be eligible for a refund. In the event of an emergency, we may consider a refund, minus our payment system's non-refundable fees. We handle these requests on a case-by-case basis.
