Talking to Strangers: Writing Dialogue That Makes Characters Real (with Drew Johnson)
Dialogue is present in our fiction before we ever have a chance to think about dialogue. Our characters speak because they have to—because we need them to speak. By the time we ask ourselves, how do we make our characters sound like real people, we’ve already formed habits: our dialogue happens as easily as we type. How can we make our dialogue better? How can we give dialogue back to the characters we’ve created so that they sound like people, talking? Can we write dialogue that surprises us? That runs all our narrative errands while deepening our characters in ways we never intended? This class will be all about new paths into dialogue, new exercises, new approaches. By the end of this class you’ll have written freestanding conversations that will surprise you—and given you back dialogue as its own realm, its own reality within the larger reality of your work.
