Writing About Sex - 5 Weeks (with Caroline Belle Stewart) - ONLINE
“Sex is a kind of crucible of humanness,” says the author Garth Greenwell, “and so the question isn’t so much why one would write about sex, as why one would write about anything else.” In this class we’ll explore what effectively-written sex in literature can do: unearth unexpected traits of character, articulate spiritual and metaphysical concepts, engage with systems of power and oppression, arouse, disturb, and entertain. We’ll question the definition of a “good sex scene,” examine what unconscious biases could be blocking us from writing detailed, honest, sex, and consider our responsibilities as sex writers in the context of issues such as trauma and consent. We'll also discuss how to introduce erotic tension into our work without writing about sex directly. To these ends, we’ll read examples of sex writing across genres from writers of various sexual and gender identities, generate creative and reflective writing in response to prompts, and write together as a group. And we’ll each have the chance to workshop our work at least once over the course of the class. Whether we’re afraid to write about sex or we’ve been writing erotica for years, we’ll come away from this class empowered and inspired by exciting new approaches to take back to our work.
WHEN: Thursdays, April 1 - 29 (6 - 8pm EST)
WHERE: Online, via Zoom video conference

RECEIVING THE ZOOM LINK: For one-day workshops, we send out the link to attend the Zoom session 1 - 2 days before the event, via email. For multi-week workshops, you should receive info and the link about 3 - 5 days before. Please mark your calendars when you first register and look for our emails. If you don't see the email in your inbox on the day before the class, please check your spam and junk mail folders (and search all folders) for an email from firstname.lastname@example.org before contacting us. We have found that very often our emails end up in those folders. This is based on your own email settings, and you can prevent this by adding our email as a contact.
ONLINE SESSIONS happen remotely, via Zoom video conference. All you need is a laptop, computer, or phone with functioning audio and a webcam. Those who RSVP receive directions and a link to "join" the session via email (please see above note about receiving the Zoom link). All online instructors will log on to the video conference a few minutes before the start of the session, so please plan to log on early if you'd like assistance! We'll do everything in our power to help you get comfortable with the Zoom format, though we are not able to offer technical assistance beyond basic Zoom orientation.
