Do You Want to Volunteer at Pioneer Valley Writers' Workshop?
*We are currently seeking a volunteer to help with administration *
Volunteers work closely with Director Joy Baglio assisting with social media posting, blog development, and organizing readings and events, though we are specifically seeking someone who is able to work independently and take on some of the daily administrative tasks. Schedules are casual, and all of the work can be done remotely from home, a cafe, the library, wherever you choose. In exchange for your hard work, you’ll get an insider’s look at the Northampton literary scene, free attendance at all Pioneer Valley Writers’ Workshop classes, the opportunity to work alongside authors, editors, and writing instructors, and some valuable skills and experience. We are also very happy to write recommendations and act as mentors for those seeking guidance with MFA applications, publishing, and next steps in their writing careers. This is a great opportunity for someone wanting to get involved in a local writing organization: recent college grads, aspiring writers, retirees seeking to devote time to a literary life and their writing, and anyone interested in the literary arts.
NOTE: This is an unpaid position!
The ideal candidate will have: • A comfort/familiarity with social media (FB, Twitter, Instagram) and easy website builders like Weebly. • Interest and ability in management, entrepreneurship, and community organizing, specifically in the arts. • Strong writing skills and comfort with words, especially composing emails and social media posts. • Good PR skills and comfort communicating and interacting with others. • Organizational skills & meticulous attention to detail. • Ability to learn new tasks quickly and troubleshoot/problem-solve when necessary. • Excitement to work around writers and talk about writing, craft, books. • Experience with or interest in writing and the literary world. • Ability to work well with others, take direction and feedback, as well as work independently with minimal direction at times. • Photoshop and Illustrator experience a plus, but not mandatory. • An enthusiastic, warm, and can-do attitude.
Position may entail: • Updating our website with current class information a couple times a week. • Posting about upcoming classes and events to social media and other online platforms (multiple times a week) • Email correspondence with students and prospective students, especially before/after workshops. • Compiling post-workshop feedback for instructors. • Corresponding with PVWW instructors and local authors regarding our events and classes • Making copies, distributing posters and brochures. • Setting up for events, writing classes, and literary readings. • Contacting local bookstores and other venues to set up readings and other events. • Developing and writing posts for PVWW's blog. • Interviewing PVWW instructors and local authors. • Some grant writing and research. • Attending Instructor meetings and taking minutes.
