Class Description

Community Reading / Word Share was created in the spirit of giving PVWW students, instructors, community members, and especially those writers who frequently attend Community Writing a safe, encouraging space in which to read work aloud as well as listen to their peers' readings. Come share the recent writing you've done at Community Writing, in a recent workshop, ongoing group, residency, a recently published story, a stream of consciousness journal entry, or other work you want to celebrate! Writers do not need to share their own work, either. Feel free to read a favorite poem, passage, or other text that inspires you. We will offer supportive listening. Above all, we will practice the art of verbally sharing words aloud while meeting others in a positive, uplifting communal spirit. Reading order and signup will happen in the first ten minutes of the gathering. Featured final reader: Rachel Lyon, author of two novels (Fruit of the Death and Self-Portrait with Boy.) GUIDELINES: • Readers will have approximately 3 minutes to read. Please time yourself in advance. • If there are more than 12 people wanting to read, we will draw names at the start of the event. • Some Community Readings may feature a special Guest Reader who will read at the end. • Readings can be from works of any genre, style, or subject matter, your own work or a favorite text, but please use common sense and good judgment! Pieces with overly graphic adult content and excessive profanity are not good choices for this event. • There is no on-the-spot feedback offered, though we offer supportive listening ears! If you are interested in instruction, feedback, or a smaller group of writers that meets weekly, we suggest you visit our Courses page on our website! FEATURED AUTHOR RACHEL LYON is the author of Fruit of the Dead and Self-Portrait with Boy, a finalist for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. An editor emerita for Epiphany, she has taught creative writing at the Sackett Street Writers Workshop, Bennington College, and other institutions. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Rachel lives in western Massachusetts with her husband and two young children. FACILITATOR / HOST JOY BAGLIO founded Pioneer Valley Writers' Workshop in 2016 and has hosted Community Writing and many other readings, events, and workshops since then. Find her online at
