Class Description

Want to make your stories unputdownable? In this class, we’ll break down the mechanics of momentum so that we have a clear understanding of its function and role, and we’ll create a toolbox of strategies that we can use to create momentum and propulsion in our own writing. Each week will combine craft lessons, writing exercises, and close reading of texts or excerpts that illustrate the techniques we learn. Writers can expect to complete approximately 30-60 minutes of recommended reading and writing outside of class time each week. There will be no formal workshopping element; however, each each participant will have the opportunity to submit a piece of up to 4,000 words to the instructor and will receive a one-page feedback letter with special focus on momentum. Note: While this class is fiction-focused, the techniques are applicable to other narrative-based writing (e.g. creative nonfiction, memoir.) This class is suitable for writers of all levels, yet it will most benefit writers with at least some previous experience. Limited to 10 writers. WEEKLY BREAKDOWN: Week One: Defining Momentum / What Is Momentum? Week Two: Pacing, Structure, and Focus Week Three: Igniting Curiosity Week Four: Engineering Suspense Week Five: Propulsive Language Week Six: Surprise - the big ""Aha"" moment and the delighting ""swerve"" INSTRUCTOR SARAH JANE CODY's fiction and essays have been published in journals such as Gulf Coast, The Cincinnati Review, The Common, and Joyland among others.
