Class Description

In this generative class, we will explore the ways in which astral and celestial phenomena inspire us to write new poems about ourselves, one another and our connections to the world and the cosmos? Lets stoke our curiosity and sense of wonder as we explore mysteries such as black holes, singularities and dark matter and read work by other poets who have drawn connections to astrophysics in their writing. This workshop does not require any prior knowledge of astrophysics--just curiosity! There will be opportunities to share work verbally and receive informal, verbal feedback from the instructor and from classmates (if desired). Readings will include poems by Marie Howe, Rosebud Ben-Oni, Jocelyn Heath, Tracy K. Smith and others. INSTRUCTOR JOAN KWON GLASS is the author of NIGHT SWIM, winner of the Diode Book Prize (Diode Editions, 2022) & two chapbooks. She serves as poet laureate for Milford, CT, Editor in Chief for Harbor Review & as a writing instructor for Brooklyn Poets, Corporeal & Hudson Valley Writers Center. Joan’s poems have been featured or are forthcoming in The Slowdown, Poetry Northwest, Ninth Letter, Rattle, Tahoma Literary Review, Prairie Schooner, Salamander & elsewhere. She has been a finalist for the University of Akron Poetry Prize, the Subnivean Award, the Lumiere Review Award & the Sundress Academy Broadside Contest & her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize & Sundress Best of the Net.
