Writing is revision, a riddle the writer unravels word by word, sentence by sentence to uncover what a piece wants to say—and bring it to completion. Revision is an act of paying attention to language and unleashing its possibilities. It’s an act of courage: we follow a sentence that holds a fear we’d rather not face; we have to let go of writing that we’re attached to because the piece will be stronger without it. As we revise, we revise ourselves too—inevitably the writing knows more than we do. We get out of the way of the writing and let the writing lead. In this cross-genre workshop (all levels welcome) you’ll choose one short piece to dive into and revise it over eight weeks, taking it further each week. We’ll discuss elements of craft as they arise within your writing, such as detail and the image, juxtaposition and surprise, diction, syntax and rhythm, beginnings and endings. You’ll spend a few hours revising your piece outside class each week, as well as reviewing and commenting on the pieces submitted for workshop. I’ll assign reading or videos meant to inspire and guide your process. In advance of the first class I'll send a video on craft--and I'll need two brave souls to volunteer for the first workshop. In addition, each participant will sign up for a 30-minute conference with the instructor. TOPICS COVERED OVER OVER THE EIGHT WEEKS: • Paying honest attention • Detail / the Image • Metaphor • Diction & Syntax • Rhythm & Sound • Juxtaposition • Beginnings & Endings INSTRUCTOR CANDICE REFFE’s book of poems Live from the Mood Board, an insider’s view of the fashion world and corporate power, won Elixir Press’s Antivenom Poetry Award and was published in 2019.
