Class Description

The opening of a story is often what lures and lingers most with a reader. However, there is no clear beginning or ending to the narrative of our lives. As memoirists, we grapple with the challenge and opportunity to create coherence throughout the raw material of memory. Whether you’re deep at work on a project or just about to start, this class will help uncover inventive and surprising ways to open and close your story, creating the most lasting impact for your reader. We will consider published examples, experiment with in-class writing, and offer supportive feedback to uplift moments of greatest resonance. Two short craft readings will be emailed to the group before the first class. Limited to 12 writers. INSTRUCTOR ARYA SAMUELSON is the winner of New Ohio Review's 2023 Nonfiction Prize and CutBank’s Montana Prize in Non-Fiction, awarded by Cheryl Strayed. Her work has also been published in Bellevue Literary Review, The Millions, New Delta Review, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA from Mills College, and is working on a novel and a memoir in essays.
