Class Description

You might have your main character, the setting, the inciting incident, or maybe even an idea for your ending. Venturing into a full novel manuscript, however, doesn’t just require vision, imagination, and commitment—it should also entail having a good understanding of what tends to go wrong along the way. In this two-hour seminar, we will delve into the major pitfalls writers face when drafting their novel. From unclear stakes, to thinning or confusing plots, to increasingly passive characters, we will discuss key areas you should prioritize during the writing process. We will look at concrete tips on how to prevent these issues, and explore strategies to ensure you have a clear, compelling, and layered narrative from the start. You can expect to leave this seminar with a strong understanding of what usually hampers a good novel draft, as well as the information and confidence to avoid these common mistakes. DARIEL SUAREZ is the author of The Playwright's House, finalist for the Rudolfo Anaya Fiction Award and the Massachusetts Book Award, and A Kind of Solitude, winner of the Spokane Prize. A City of Boston inaugural Artist Fellow, Dariel has been awarded the First Lady Cecile de Jongh Literary Prize and an International Latino Book Award. His prose has appeared in Best American Essays, The Threepenny Review, The Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, LitHub, and Michigan Quarterly Review, among others. Dariel earned his MFA in Fiction at Boston University and now resides in the MetroWest area with his wife and daughter.
