Class Description

A great essay is a tiny window that opens on a whole world. In this class, we’ll learn how to create those windows. Through generative exercises, short readings, and discussion, we’ll examine what makes an essay work and how to translate personal experience or research into creative prose. Taught by a journalist and novelist, this class will also explore the role of the essay in a creative writer’s toolkit — how the form can be useful for fiction writers, poets, and memoirists alike, and how learning to write a great essay can help writers more effectively share their work with readers. This class is designed for beginners, but writers who have written essays in the past will also have the opportunity to sharpen their craft. ANNA NORTH is the author of four novels: Bog Queen, Outlawed (a New York Times bestseller and Reese’s Book Club pick), The Life and Death of Sophie Stark, and America Pacifica. North has been a reporter and editor at Jezebel, BuzzFeed, and the New York Times, and is now a senior correspondent at Vox. She holds a BA from Stanford and an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
