Class Description
Every storyteller evokes a world: in this sense, the task of speculative and mainstream writers is identical. We want to take our readers somewhere they can’t help but believe in, somewhere they can’t get enough of, in the company of characters they can’t get out of their heads. But in other respects, speculative fiction is quite distinct, both in the challenge it presents and the freedom it extends. This is a class on building irresistible stories, with a strong but not exclusive focus on fantasy, SF, and related forms. Yes, we’ll talk about world building—but integrated with character, language, pacing, dialogue, and other fundamentals of good fiction. Your own in-class writing, guided by prompts and exercises, will form the backbone of the class. There will be time for sharing aloud and feedback, as well as specific craft discussions, glances at works of imperishable genius, and discussion of careers, community, and the writing life. Any outside reading will be optional. INSTRUCTOR: Robert V.S. Redick is the author of The Red Wolf Conspiracy, Master Assassins, Sidewinders and other epic fantasies. His books have been shortlisted for the Locus Award, SFX Novel Award, and the AWP/Thomas Dunne Award for Best Novel. He’s taught fiction writing at Stonecoast, the University of Nevada, the Salam Award Workshop (Lahore, Pakistan), Hampshire College, and elsewhere. Find him at robertvsredick.com. WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT ROBERT: "The instructor is very likable and knowledgeable. Robert knows a lot, and he is very respectful and very good at facilitating conversation in a way that sticks to the point of the class."
