Class Description

In this one-day session for poets of all levels of experience, we will work together to understand how to see poetic forms not as restrictive, prescriptive boxes that limit creativity, but as launch pads, sandboxes, and collaborative forces in generating new work. By reading poems that work in, with, and against form, writing in relationship to form ourselves, and uncovering what it is that has drawn poets to form for millennia, participants will leave the course with a better understanding of the wide array of forms and the ways that writing in form and breaking it can keep the writing flowing. Some forms we will cover include: the sonnet, pantoum, sestina, haibun, burning haibun, duplex, ghazal, and possible more if we have the time. TREVOR KETNER is the author of THE WILD HUNT DIVINATIONS: A GRIMOIRE (Wesleyan University Press, 2023) and [WHITE] (UGA Press, 2021) selected as a winner of the National Poetry Series by Forrest Gander. A 2025 Yaddo fellow, they received fellowships from MacDowell, Lambda Literary, Poets House, The Poetry Project, and Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. They hold an MFA from the University of Minnesota and live in New York City.
