If you have questions, email admin@pioneervalleywriters.com.*** ABOUT THE CLASS In this self-paced 50-minute introductory pre-recorded course, novelist Blair Hurley shares three fundamental elements of storytelling: story structure (including story arc and the trajectory stories take), character development and what makes characters multi-dimensional, as well as the elements of style such as language, voice, and perspective. Short excerpts from classic literature provide tangible examples, and the class ends with a writing exercise that challenges writers to put into practice these fundamentals. For beginning and intermediate fiction writers. ***On-demand classes are not live. They can be watched and re-watched at your own pace. It is for those who've purchased and watched Fundamentals, and who'd like to continue the discussion, meet fellow writers, and ask questions of the group and Blair. It will be assumed that all attendees have watched the pre-recorded class before the Q&A, and the discussion will jump off from that point! INSTRUCTOR: BLAIR HURLEY teaches novel writing in PVWW's 10-Month Manuscript Program. Her first novel, THE DEVOTED, was published with WW Norton in 2018, and was longlisted for The Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize. Her second novel, MINOR PROPHETS, was published with Ig Publishing in 2023. Her work is published in New England Review, Electric Literature, The Georgia Review, Guernica, Paris Review Daily, West Branch, and elsewhere. She is a Pushcart Prize winner and an ASME Fiction award finalist. Her story “The Telepathist” was listed as a Distinguished Story in Best American Short Stories 2022. Blair has her A.B. in English and Creative Writing from Princeton University and her M.F.A. in Fiction from New York University. She lives outside Toronto.

If you withdraw from a workshop TEN DAYS OR MORE before the start of the class: You'll receive credit toward another workshop (minus 10% transaction fee) OR a full refund (minus 10% transaction fee). If you withdraw from a workshop nine days before the start of the class up until 48 hours before: You'll receive a refund minus 20%. If you withdraw from a workshop less than 48 hours before the start of a class or after the class has begun: We cannot offer credit or any refund. If you are absent on the day of your workshop or miss it for any reason, we are unable to offer any kind of refund or credit. If we have to cancel a class you have paid for, you will receive a full refund, without the service charge deducted.
