Class Description

Humor, when used effectively, can be a powerful tool for the emotional depth of an essay. The levity can enhance sincere parts, allowing your readers to journey into more potent topics. In this one-day class, we will discuss a few essays that balance humor with the serious and extrapolate the strategies imbued on the page. Students will also have a chance to apply techniques to their own work and/or embark on some humor writing. Though this says the level is Beginner, it is a class for Nonfiction writer at any level who are open to considering whether humor could serve as an additional tool in their craft. ANITA GILL is a Fulbright Scholar whose work has appeared in The Iowa Review, Kweli, Prairie Schooner, The Offing, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. Her writing has been listed as Notable in Best American Essays and won The Iowa Review Award in Nonfiction. She has been an attendee of Tin House Workshops, Disquiet International, the StoryBoard Conference and elsewhere. She holds an MA in Literature from American University and an MFA in Writing from Pacific University. She currently serves as the Nonfiction Editor for Hypertext Review while working on a novel. WHAT STUDENTS SAY: "This was one of the best short classes I have taken from any source....Anita gave us tools to use, and presented in a clear, professional manner, and with an infective enthusiasm." - Julia C. "I got so much information from Anita. She was a very organized speaker, clearly explaining the information and kept on task."- Amy P.
