Class Description

During a conversation with Maya Angelou, James Baldwin said: “The only way to live is knowing you’re going to die. If you’re afraid to die, you’ll never be able to live.” The fear of death is as natural as life—if we want to live, how can we learn to accept death? In this generative workshop, we’ll read from examples of various genres that focus on Death as a literary theme, from the personification of Death like in Jose Saramago’s Death with Interruptions to the defiance against Death like in Clarice Lispector’s Agua Viva. From the seeds of these examples and other narrative prompts, we’ll create new writing using our fear of death as creative energy. We’ll share and discuss what we write; together, we’ll try to reconcile the desire for life with the inevitability of death. Writers will leave with new pieces of writing as well as the beginnings for longer pieces. JADE SONG'S award-winning debut novel Chlorine was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice and translated into multiple languages. Song’s second novel, I Love You Don’t Die, will be published in March 2026, and their short story collection, Ox Ghost Snake Demon, is forthcoming in 2027. Song has been a featured speaker or teacher at The Writer’s Center, Amherst College, Tin House, The Miami Book Fair, and elsewhere.
