Reading-as-a-Writer: Experimental Poetry
4-Week Session • with Trevor Ketner • All Levels
Available spots
Class Description
Using specific poems as our guides, we will survey the wildly varied ways in which contemporary (and one or two historical) poets experiment with form and language. The reading list will be something of an anthology of poems, one from a given author, that we will read closely and unpack together. While not every poem will resonate with everyone in the class, we will find craft takeaways to apply to our own writing, and together develop a broader understanding of the landscape of experimental poetics. I will also speak to my own experience writing my books within a framework of experimental poetics. Students can expect 1-2 hours of reading per week. The reading list will include poems by Mary Szybist, CAConrad, Douglas Kearney, Robert Lax, Layli Long Soldier, Edwin Torres, Jos Charles, Lillian-Yvonne Bertram, Cody-Rose Clevidence, Ted Berrigan, Gertrude Stein, Bhanu Kapil, Jillian Weise, Anne Carson, and potentially others should discussion spark new avenues of exploration. TREVOR KETNER is the author of THE WILD HUNT DIVINATIONS: A GRIMOIRE (Wesleyan University Press, 2023) and [WHITE] (UGA Press, 2021) selected as a winner of the National Poetry Series by Forrest Gander. A 2025 Yaddo fellow, they received fellowships from MacDowell, Lambda Literary, Poets House, The Poetry Project, and Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. They hold an MFA from the University of Minnesota and live in New York City.
