Class Description

Embarking on a novel manuscript can be both exciting and intimidating. Very often, writers begin to lose steam a few chapters in, even if they’ve planned and outlined things in advance. This is because novels are a marathon. They demand patience and commitment, a constantly renewed belief that the struggle is worth it. But they also demand sustained vision and a sound understanding of the different ways a novel can be developed. In this two-hour seminar, we will look at specific strategies you can implement to not just explore an idea or plan your novel manuscript, but to successfully execute a full draft. We will discuss how to identify the essential elements of your story, deepen your characters’ motivations, maximize plot possibilities, and approach the drafting process in a way that matches your natural preferences as a writer. You can expect to leave this session with concrete recommendations and tips that you can immediately implement as you embark on your novel adventure. Limited to 15 writers. DARIEL SUAREZ is the author of The Playwright's House, finalist for the Rudolfo Anaya Fiction Award and the Massachusetts Book Award, and A Kind of Solitude, winner of the Spokane Prize. A City of Boston inaugural Artist Fellow, Dariel has been awarded the First Lady Cecile de Jongh Literary Prize and an International Latino Book Award. His prose has appeared in Best American Essays, The Threepenny Review, The Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, LitHub, and Michigan Quarterly Review, among others. Dariel earned his MFA in Fiction at Boston University and now resides in the MetroWest area with his wife and daughter.
